Last night I had a completely unwarranted dream I bought an 80's Mercedes-Benz 300D wagon, which confuses me.
In said dream the car was that dark golden-beige color mid-80's Mercs always seem to come in (see the second picture), and I bought it from a super-old German guy in Amish country (wtf). I don't remember if it was a manual or not, but it was apparently in really nice shape, and I must have gotten a great price on it because I felt positively victorious as I drove it off the dude's property and back to my house.
I have no earthly idea why I would buy an old Merc, much less a 300D wagon: I have no need for such a car, as my little Focus hatch is nearly as practical as any wagon would be, I'm not particularly fond of diesels or Mercedes-Benzes (though in typical Jalop fashion I do like wagons), and I already spend enough money on repairs to my Focus and would thus never take on a potential nightmare like an old German car. But regardless I was happy as hell as I cruised down my little Midwestern town's main street in a clattery, carbureted five-cylinder Mercedes-Benz, and was actually really disappointed to look out my bedroom window to see the Focus sitting all by its lonesome on our side street without a big beige Krautwagen alongside it. You guys have apparently infiltrated the deepest depths of my psyche, which greatly worries me. If I start talking in doge-speak or posting gratuitously NSFW posts send halp. Preferably in the form of a Lotus Exige or Escort Cossie rally car.
TL;DR: had a dream I bought a very Jalop car I didn't know I wanted for no reason at all, and woke up sad I didn't actually own a very Jalop car I didn't know I wanted.

Doge speak has already infected some of us.

Don't worry. You're just tapping into your past life as a German Dictator.

I know that feeling. I had a dream the other night that the Legacy GT wagon I was going to be checking out the next day got a terrible review from the PPI, and that my favorite Legacy GT ever - a Stage 2 car built to handle a larger turbo, but still running the stock VF40 (read: very reliable power), and one available for the exact same price as the one I was looking at - passed with flying colors. Dream-me then bought the fun, modified car and had a number of great experiences with it (this was a pretty long dream, actually...).
Then I woke up, and the LGT wagon deal fell through. The nice car is still available, but it's expensive, and it's winter.

I like the body style and those were SOLID cars. But have you actually driven a 300D? With it's 0-60 times of what seemed like 1 or 2 minutes? And actually was slower to 60 mph than the USS Ronald Reagan (aircraft carrier)? Those facts should demolish your dream. Swap in an LS2 and that'd be a driveable car!

15-20 seconds seems to be what most 300D owners are claiming on the forums. Sure they'd love an LS swap too haha.

Your dream was even worse than mine, then, I didn't do anything to the Merc except drive it home, you lived with the Legacy for a while :( Sorry to hear about the Legacy IRL. Are you still in the market for one, or just waiting until spring when more owners put their cars up for sale? I've always had a soft spot for Legacy wagons, almost bought one while looking for my Focus.

I'll be waiting. It really depends where I'll be next year, and whether I'll need such a vehicle. But if things come together, something like that ideal Legacy (video below of that car that I shot two years ago) would be amazing.

You should definitely drive one if you get the chance. That 15-20 seconds may be true but when you've got it floored and waiting for it to get up to speed, it's an eternity. It would drive you nuts. Or force you to adopt an zen monk like attitude.
Once it got up to speed and you didn't need to change that speed, it felt great. Very solid feel at speed. And it looks better than the current models.

I'd love to be able to drive a 300D! I'm a fan of old cars, yet I've never driven anything older than a 1998 Oldsmobile. I'd imagine the old Mercs, as you mention, feel like absolute tanks on the road, something I've never experienced driving the small compacts my family has always owned and I have always preferred. Still, there's something about a big ol' German sedan, isn't there :)
